We follow a mastery approach to the teaching and learning of Mathematics in our school. We believe that all children should work together to become fluent mathematicians who are able to reason and solve a variety of problems by applying what they have learned in a range of contexts.
We use the Can Do Maths resources to support our curriculum provision in EYFS, Y1 and Y2 alongside resources from NCETM, I See Maths and White Rose Maths. Our curriculum promotes a deep, long-term, secure and adaptable understanding of the subject so that children are fluent at mathematics. We expect children to reason mathematically and develop the ability to apply maths to solve problems. Children’s conceptual understanding is developed through concrete and visual representations and children are given opportunities to explain their reasoning as part of our daily maths lessons. Our teaching focuses on developing a secure and deep understanding, using practical resources alongside formal representations which supports the learning and memorisation of mathematical concepts.
We are participating in the Mastering Number Programme which creates secure firm foundations in the development of good number sense for all children from Reception through to Year 1 and Year 2. The aim, over time, is that children will leave KS1 with fluency in calculation and a confidence and flexibility with number. Attention is given to key knowledge and understanding needed in Reception classes, and progression through KS1 to support success in the future.
In the Early Years, early mathematical understanding is achieved during both child initiated play and adult teaching through meaningful contexts, so that all children have daily moments where they explicitly engage with mathematical concepts and language. Emphasis is given to developing children’s spatial reasoning. Spatial reasoning involves our interpretation of how things, including ourselves, relate to each other and our spatial environment. In education and in everyday life, we use spatial reasoning to interpret images, create representations and in (mental) manipulation, enabling us to predict and solve problems.
