Humanities at Innsworth Infant School

At Innsworth Infant School Humanities provides children with the opportunity to develop a curiosity and fascination about the world, its people and the past.

Throughout their explorations in Topic, and as part of their Geography learning, children will study places and the relationships between people and their environments. They will be inspired to link their learning to real life experiences, building connections between themselves, our local area and the wider world community. Our Geography curriculum provides opportunities to explore the world using maps, globes, atlases, images and videos which promotes the application of Geographical skills. Pupils are taught to identify human and physical features comparing their local area and other places. This allows us to build on our connections we have with a wide range of communities and deepen their understanding of places around the world.

The teaching of History promotes an enquiry approach encouraging the children to ask and answer questions building on what they already know and what they could find out. It provides them with the opportunity to study people and events in the past, in particular noticing the changes, making comparisons and reflecting on their effect over time. Pupils are taught to investigate by making observations and inferences about the past and use a wide range of sources including images and artefacts as evidence. Our History curriculum encourages them to discuss their findings, justify their opinions as well as value others opinions. It is important to us that History is made accessible to the children and that connections are made where they can connect their findings to their own, real life experiences.
